WELTON ROVERS 3 SHERBORNE TOWN 1

After the heroics of Saturday’s Vase win, it was back to League action for Welton last Tuesday evening when Sherborne Town were the visitors to West Clewes.

In a cracking game that was a credit to both sides, it was Welton who came out on top after going behind early on.

The first rain in over a week was falling as the match got underway in front of a crowd of nearly one hundred spectators, it took the visitors only ten minutes to take the lead.

A cross from the left was met by Ashley Clark and he beat two defenders before firing home, giving Matt Dunk in the Welton goal no chance. Dunk was called into action again when he produced a top drawer save to deny the visitors a second goal.

Welton responded and a scrambled effort from Joe Garland was cleared off the Sherborne goal line and Dunk then produced another good save to deny Sherborne.

Welton equalised on 35 minutes when the ball was fed out to David Regula on the left and he turned and wriggled his way into the box before being upended and the referee had no hesitation in awarding Welton the spot kick. Up stepped Regula who planted the ball high into the roof of the net.

The second half saw Welton taking control of the game and were pressurising the visitors. They were rewarded on 76 minutes, when Lewis Russell cut in from the right flank and his cross was met by Matt Curnock. His goal-bound effort was blocked by the Sherborne keeper, only for the ball to fall to Regula, who was on hand to drill the ball home to score the second goal for Welton.

As added time approached, Regula put the icing on the cake when he met Russell’s corner and managed to poke the ball into the net at the second attempt to secure his hat trick and Welton’s third goal, making it three wins on the bounce for Tom Smith’s Welton side. Bob Allard
