Welton ran out comfortable winners in difficult circumstances made worse by a hostile and confrontational Oldland side.
Rovers weren’t at their best, and conceded territory to the Os for a lot of the first half, but when chances were created, they always fell to Rovers.
Will Gould was making his first start for the club since joining this Summer, and the Midsomer Norton lad marked the occasion with a full-debut goal. With only a two goal deficit, both teams had all to play for in the second half, but Rovers immediately asserted their superiority, adding two further goals in a five
minute period. With twenty minutes remaining in the game, a flash point led to Oldland getting on the scoresheet. An off the ball incident occurred in the Rovers penalty area.
The referee settled on a yellow card for each side, and a penalty for Abbotonians. Adam Mahdi stepped up to send Matt Dunk the wrong way, and in doing so, Welton conceded their first goal in 456 minutes of football. Five minutes from time, Oldland reduced the deficit further when a free kick was lumped into the Welton area from deep and from a crowd of players the ball found itself in the net.
Welton would have the final word, however, and it came in the form of
Slocombe’s seventh goal of the season.
Rovers remain unbeaten this season, and atop of the First Division table.
