BOB Allard, the long-standing match reporter for Welton Rovers, joined the Jewson Western League podcast to reflect on his quarter-century of service to the "Green Army" and the vital role of local sports journalism.
The interview reunited Allard with host Ian Nockolds, the pair having previously worked together on the sports show for Somer Valley FM, the community radio station in Midsomer Norton.
During the discussion, Allard highlighted his 25-year tenure as a match reporter, describing the role as a "labour of love". Beyond his weekly reports for the local paper, Allard also serves as the ground announcer at West Clewes, providing team news and club updates over the PA system on match days.
Nockolds and Allard emphasised the importance of the weekly match report as a historical record. Allard noted that while digital platforms like X (formerly Twitter) are essential for immediate results, the printed report remains a staple for the local community, particularly for older supporters.
Reflecting on the current season, Allard acknowledged a recent 4-1 defeat to Odd Down but pointed to the "green shoots of recovery" following a massive Boxing Day victory over local rivals Radstock Town in the "Coalfield Classico," which drew an attendance of over 400 people. He remains optimistic about the squad’s mixture of senior experience and local youth talent.
Welton Rovers continues to serve as a community hub under the leadership of chairman Ryan Grubb.
Allard described the club as "buzzing," with facilities hosting a variety of local events including Valentine's parties, bingo, and quiz nights.
"Just because you're at the bottom doesn't mean you've had it," Allard stated. "The club's always been there for the local community... and long may it remain so".
