FA VASE 3RD ROUND WELTON ROVERS 0 BODMIN TOWN 2

Welton’s interest in this year’s Vase competition ended on a freezing cold, windy Tuesday evening at West Clewes.

This FA Vase third round tie got underway at the sixth time of asking and both sides took time to get to grip with the conditions. An excellent save by Welton keeper Sam Lewis, after ten minutes, denied the visitors an early lead.

Welton’s cause wasn’t helped after twenty minutes when Jamie Gregory was sent off following a strong tackle. This seemed a somewhat harsh decision considering the conditions. Welton then pressed and efforts from Chris Peck and Dan Cottle went close. However, on the stroke of half-time, Bodmin took the lead when a pin point cross from the right, met by a Steve Bowler header that flew into the Welton net.

The second half saw Bodmin pressing earlier with the strong wind behind them but Welton weathered the storm and the ten men of Welton were causing problems for the visitors, who were on the back foot. Bodmin were then reduced to ten men when goal scorer, Bowler, was shown a second yellow card for a crunching tackle.

However, Welton couldn’t make the vital breakthrough despite their tremendous efforts and with five minutes to go, they were caught on the break when full back, Nick Hurst, was found in space and he made no mistake to score Bodmin’s second and see them through to the fourth round.
