It was a frustrating Saturday for players, officials and members of The Green Army, who had made the long trip to South Somerset.
A mid-morning inspection of the pitch at Dening Sports Field, home of opponents, Chard Town, had been passed as playable. Welton players and officials arrived at Chard at 1.30 p.m., and members of the Green Army had arrived and others were travelling along the A303 to the match.
On arrival, the match referee was concerned about the state of the pitch, and shortly before 2 p.m., declared the pitch ‘dangerous’ and ‘unplayable’ – a decision that was supported by Welton officials.
Frantic messages were sent to the travelling Green Army to turn them around, so it was back to West Clewes to see what was left of the second half between the Reserves and Glastonbury, which, despite a good effort from the Reserves, saw them go down, 3-2.
This Saturday, 22nd December, Welton are away to Wincanton Town; kick-off: 3 p.m. On Boxing Day, 26th December, Welton face local rivals, Radstock Town, in the Coalfield Classico derby at West Clewes; kick-off 1 p.m.
