DESPITE a 2-1 loss away to Devizes Town in the first division of the Jewson Western League, Welton Rovers delivered a performance which should fill supporters with hope for the season ahead.

Facing a strong Devizes side, who had just delivered one of their best performances of the season in mid-week, Welton's youthful squad showed immense resilience and a clear game plan.

The hosts managed to take a two-goal lead early in the second half, with goals from Jacob Reader and Jon Bazley. However, Welton refused to be disheartened. Out of nowhere, a fantastic strike from Mason Kelsey brought Welton back into the game, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and putting significant pressure on the home side.

From that point onwards, Devizes manager Chris Allen admitted his team was "hanging on at the end".

Allen lauded Welton's efforts, in his post match interview, noting that Welton had a game plan and stuck to it. He thought Welton looked competitive in this league and that the performance should offer hope for the season.

This echoes earlier observations that Welton have been playing more organised and structured football, picking up points early this season and entering this match three games unbeaten.

Devizes were certainly not at their best, missing several key players and appearing "leggy" after a demanding midweek fixture. Their manager confessed he "expected this performance" due to the significant effort expended previously and the squad being "slightly stretched".

The fact Welton pushed them so hard, even leading to Devizes having to bring on a 16-year-old in difficult circumstances, underscores the fighting spirit shown by Welton’s youngsters.

While the result was a defeat, the tenacity, organisation, and ability to get back into the game against a top team highlight significant progress for Rovers. This display should be a source of pride and optimism for everyone connected with the club.
