The Seniors Section of Fosseway Golf Club again struggled on its travels, losing 5–0 away to Bassett Down in the most recent social match. On a scorching hot day, the players found the long course a difficult proposition.
Captain, Cyril Blacker, was first out with his partner, Rod Bruce, losing their match 5 & 4. Ray Lake and Pete Fitch went down by a similar margin, while Bob Smith and Reg Curtis lost
9 & 8 and Terry Button and Arthur Bellinger were defeated 7 & 6. George Underwood and Colin Moon were in line to be Fosseway's only successful pairing as they led until the last few holes when the weather took its toll and they finished one down.
There was much better news for Bob Smith just three days later when he triumphed impressively in the July Medal. His nett total of 57 saw him four shots clear of John Ticehurst and John Appleton, who both recorded 61. Ticehurst claimed second place on countback.
The Seniors again showed that there is no place like home when they turned in a top performance when entertaining Brean in the second leg of the FosseBrean Trophy. After losing 5–1 in the first meeting, the odds were against Fosseway, but a 5 1/2 – 5 victory saw them collect the trophy for only the fourth time in fifteen years.
Captain, Cyril Blacker, set the tone with a fine display in partnership with Howard Nowell, winning 4 & 3. John Bendle and Allen Cheney were one up, Gerry Rowell and Bob Smith triumphed 3 & 2, while John Wighton with Reg Curtis and Frank Reeves alongside George Underwood both won 2 & 1. Rod Bruce and Denis White halved.
The sun shone for the Captain's Trophy and there were some good scores to match. Jack Curtis and the irrepressible Bob Smith came in with 44 points, with Curtis winning on countback to head the 20–28 handicap group. John Bendle just missed out in third place with an impressive 43 points. Mike Ricketts headed the 0-–19 handicap group with 42 points, followed by Bill Lester on forty and Colin Moon on 31. Henry Thomas won the prize for nearest the pin on the fifth, with Allen Cheney hitting the longest drive on the third. Geoff Broadway was another player to enjoy the conditions, winning the 75+ age group with an excellent 43 points.
Thanks to Captain Cyril from the Seniors for such an enjoyable occasion.
