Seventeen past club/men’s captains played in their annual event and this year they were joined by mens’ captain elect Phil Leadbetter and our soon to be youngest ever head professional Alex Todd. As usual a great day was had by one and all. The golf was followed by the traditional evening and this year the captains were entertained by the longest serving past captain Mike Snaith who was captain in 1989 who recounted a history of his golfing career at Mendip. The golf was won by Martin Wilkins with 40 points after count back from Paul Smith. Current men’s captain Jack Hayes scored an outstanding 38 points, playing off a 2 handicap.

Thirty-six Mendip members and guests travelled to Royal Porthcawl for the Ladies Open. The day started with early morning breakfast rolls at the club. Then a long but most enjoyable day at a dry but blustery course. Having studied these Ladies close up there is bound to be some swing changes coming up among the Mendip members!

Meanwhile, a week earlier, the Seniors avenged the heavy defeat they sustained early in the season when they visited Long Ashton, the home match bringing a 5-1 win, points coming from Gareth Collier/Paul Godwin, Andy French/Keith Beasley, Phil Brocks/Nick Inskip, and Simon Atkinson/David Pilbeam.

The Seniors Avalon team enjoyed a handsome 5-0 home win against Weston with points from Simon Brand/ Simon Atkinson, David Braithwaite/Tony Scott, Steve Davis/Tony George, Gary Quin/Paul Godwin, and Dick Bull/Kevin Carmody.

This result ensured they will be promoted to Division One as finishing as champions of the second division.
