The first Ladies’ competition of the New Year 2020 was a non-qualifying Stableford played over 18 holes on the Duchy course with two holes, the first and seventh, shortened because of the wet conditions underfoot.
The last two competitions of 2019 had been cancelled due to the seemingly never ending deluge of rain, and after the Christmas festivities, 33 players were eager to walk off those festive calories. No-one played to par, but birdies were scored and the winners all scored over 30 points.
Division One was decided on countback, after two players scored 33 points, Pauline Young took first place, relegating Lena Warren into second. Gail Proctor was third, with 32 points. Division Two had a clear winner, Corrina Bates scored 34 points, four points ahead of second-placed Sue Barnes, with Denise Baker taking third place, with 28.
The ladies had an interesting task for the non-qualifying Stableford competition on Thursday, 9th January. Again, the rain had got the better of the Duchy course, shortening it to thirteen holes, but this proved to be enough because the thirty six competitors had to play from the men’s tees on even numbered holes and the ladies’ tees on odd numbered holes. This made some of the holes very long, but it tested the players’ skills and they saw the course from a different perspective.
Bridget Rylance scored 21 points, to take first place in Division Two. Last week’s second and third placed players swapped this week; Denise Baker was second, with 20 points, one point better than third-placed Sue Barnes.
Angela Hudd was the club house leader for Division One, with 23 points, beating Pauline Young on countback. However, late in the day, Carol Jones recorded 26 points, to take top spot.
