There was a close finish to the Clem Byrne Trophy in the Seniors section of Fosseway Golf Club with just one point separating first and second places.

In the end the new competition secretary Chris Appleton and Seniors secretary Alan Jones joined with Cyril Blacker to come out on top in the Triples Stableford with a total of eighty one points. In second place came Allen Cheney, Noel Chatfield and Malcolm Tucker with Harold Lidbitter, Mike Weeks and John Williams third with seventy five points.

The early stages of the Seniors Championship have begun with four preliminary matches and six first round contests. There was an early exit for last year’s champion, Jones, who was beaten in the preliminary round by an inspired Martyn Cuer while others to progress from the same stage were Lidbitter who beat Reg Curtis, Rex Wyatt who defeated John Waters and Appleton who had a walkover against Dave Peacey.

In the first round, Mike Ricketts beat George Underwood whilst Richard Sullivan had the better of Brian Phelps, Blacker defeated Weeks, Richard Dancey was defeated by Alan White, Seniors captain Frank Dance survived a late recovery from Williams to go through and Tucker beat Frank Reeves. M Tucker
