THE Seniors section of Fosseway Golf Club continued their excellent start to the series of social matches with a comprehensive 6-0 home win over Tickenham. Having beaten their opponents 3-2 in the away fixture recently it gave the club an aggregate score of 9-2 and enabled them to claim the inaugural cup - the Fosseway-Tickenham Trophy. It was the first time the two clubs had met and it proved a very enjoyable encounter with Fosseway having the better of the play in both inter-club matches.
Fosseway were in top form and claimed a number of convincing victories. Noel Chatfield and Anthony Gregory led the way with an 8&6 win, Andy Flagg and Cyril Blacker won 7&5 and there were 7&6 victories for Malcolm Emery and Paul Ellis and Chris Appleton and Malcolm Tucker. In closer contests Phil Winsley and Mike Weeks finished 2 up and captain Frank Dance, who was presented with the trophy, and Paul Trigg won 2&1.
The settled weather has enabled the first round of the Seniors Championship for the Rupert Moore Trophy to be completed in good time. Both of last year’s finalists Tucker and Shaun Goodwin fell at the first hurdle with Tucker being beaten by Alan Jones and Goodwin going down to Chris Appleton.
In the other matches Trigg beat Rob Wells, Gregory beat Flagg, Chatfield had the better of Gerry Rowell, Mike Ricketts came out on top against George Thurston, Weeks beat Frank Reeves and Bob Townsend defeated Chris Champion.
The fine weather continued last week with players able to enjoy ideal golfing conditions although much needed rain arrived at the weekend - but gardeners would have been very happy to see raindrops after such a long spell of dry weather.
