The sun shone for the annual Fosseway Seniors’ Open, and more than seventy players from the local area came along to support the event. The course was looking in excellent condition, thanks to a lot of hard work from the ground staff.
Fosseway member, Brian Woodruff, recorded the best score of the day with 42 points and collected the Colin Eaton Cup as the top home player. It was also a good day for Brian Francis from Mendip, who was the best visitor with 41 points.
Winston Drewitt from Westbury Golf Club topped the 0-18 section, followed by Fosseway member, Allen Cheney, and Martin Myers of Mendip. Albert Austen, who has recently joined Fosseway from Westbury, topped the 19-28 section with 38 points; Jeff Hodder returned to the club to notch second place, with the unattached C. Hawkins third. Reg Curtis of Fosseway finished top of the Over-70s section with an impressive 41 points, followed by fellow club member, Chris Shellard, with Alan Locke of Wells third.
Steve Davis of Mendip won the prize for the longest drive, while Fosseway’s Main Club Chairman, Malcolm Emery, won the prize for finishing closest on the fourteenth with his second shot. Amazingly, not one person finished on the green on the first hole and the award for nearest the pin went unclaimed. The best triple group were Shellard, Austen and Brian Fear, while Mike Ricketts and P. Smith shared the two-spot.
Overall, it was another highly successful event, with thanks to organiser Gerry Rowell, helpers Brian Phelps and Allen Cheney and the ladies, Edna Shearn, Linda Hallett and Di Nowell. who co-ordinated the entries and provided a delicious array of cakes for the competitors.
