Farrington Park juniors, Abby Gray and Isabelle Hansford, have been chosen to represent Somerset in the South West Inter-Counties team to meet five other West counties at Cumberwell Park next month.
Both are taught by Abby’s father, Farrington’s teaching professional, Terry Williams, who is also the county’s Futures Coach. Abby won the eighteen-hole Stableford competition at the junior girls’ Spring meeting at Mendip Spring.
The girls’ team also played a singles matchplay practice match against a group of professionals at Cumberwell Park. With the benefit of handicap allowance, the girls won 4–2. Both Farrington girls halved their matches.
Victoria Watts, a former Somerset county champion from Farrington Park, was a member of the Somerset county team competing in the South West Counties championship at Mendip. Gloucestershire won and Somerset finished last. Six-handicapper, Victoria, from Bishop Sutton, who is now studying at university in Scotland, was awarded her county colours.
‘Have Fun’ was the buzzword that Seniors’ Captain, Dave Elliott, insisted for his Captain’s Day at Farrington Park.
It most certainly was. The weather did its utmost to disrupt proceedings, but several downpours did little to dampen the spirit.
A variety of tees were used and there were prizes galore for individual, team and nearest the pins in one, two or three shots. In the putting competition, a plastic 14 inch putter was the only weapon available and remarkably two members scored twos on all three holes. Huge thanks go to Ray Vickers and Roger Stone for checking completed scorecards and to Keith Shepherd and Roger Cockhill for their unbounded enthusiasm in the putting green competition. Finally, thanks to Dave Elliott for organising such a fun time for his big day.
Jack Broadway won Division One of the Saturday Stableford with 39 points, one better than Andy Vaughan and Gary Prater. Matt Chard carded 37 to beat Ben Park on
countback in Division Two, with Mark Jennings one shot back. Nigel Kingman returned 39 to win Division Three by two points from Paul Smith and Jon Brignull. Tom Snelling (39), Dave Harvey (36) and Andy Coles (34) took the first places in Division One of the Sunday Stableford. Division Two: Stuart Howe 38, Ian Biddle 36, Ben Park 36. Mark Chandler carded 37 points to win Division One in the Midweek Stableford, four points better than Lee Francis. Kevin Kehoe won Division Two on 33 with Barry Young second on 31.
