Mendip’s mid-week tankard event, held in poor weather conditions, saw with the exception of one competitor, good scores hard to come by. Division 1 saw a win for Nicholas Walker, with 36 points, followed by Mark Bowers and Wayne Black, both with 32 points.

Division 2 saw a similar situation with Scott Butland winning with 36 points and he was followed by Michael Kent with 32 and Brian Say with 31. However, Division 3 saw an outstanding 44 points from Spencer Pocock, with Steve Turner second, with 39 and Andy Griffiths, third with 37.

The annual running of the Jubilee Cup saw a full field compete on a course that played remarkably well having survived the previous day’s deluge. Although not in the frame, Andy Frampton had his day made when holing his second shot from 160 yards to record an eagle 2 on the 6th.

Division 3 saw a win for Liam Robertson, with a net 67 and he was followed by Reece Francis with 69 and James Pitchell, with 70. Division 2 saw a win for John Padfield, with net 71, with Neil Bath second and Michael Gardner third, both with net 72s. Division 1 saw Mike Lill, third, with net 69 after countback, with Richard Jeffery second with 68 and Robert Ware winning the Division with 67.

However no-one could compete with the Jubilee Cup winner, Stuart Ponfield. Stuart, a member of the Green’s Team, playing off scratch, carded an amazing Gross 63, with 8 birdies and 10 pars. This is a new course record, the previous best had been 64 and that was set many years ago. Well done Stuart.

Mendip’s Men’s Team in Division 1 of the Bristol & District Golf League halved their latest match when playing a strong Clevedon Team. Mendip’s points came from the pairings of Tom Small and Jordan Vaughan, Gareth Roberts and Sam Reilly with Wayne Black playing with Chris Butland making his first appearance for the team gaining an excellent half.

Mendip Ladies A Team won their latest Alliance encounter 8–6 when visiting Bath on a wet and dismal day. Away wins are always hard fought for and Mendip’s points came from Aimee Sawyer, Jan Fukuyama, Vi Hates and Ann Hopkins.

The Ladies Alliance B Team visited Lansdown and whilst fighting hard, they just went down 6–8. Wins for Mendip came from Lynn Cox, Chris Olds and Karen Richards. The Ladies Friendly Team were in action twice, firstly losing a close game with Sherborne away 1½–2½ with a win for Nichola Croft and Pauline Williams and a half gained by Alison Letts and Julia Phillips and this was followed by a fine 4–3 victory away to Enmore. The winning pairs on this occasion were Libby Bellew and Elaine Richardson, Mary Ainsworth and Pauline Williams, Team Captain Sandie Roper and Sue Needham and Wendy Norman and Eileen Masters.

Mendip’s Mixed Friendly Team were in action visiting local neighbours, Farrington. This resulted in a fine win for Mendip 5½–1½. Wins came from June Millington and Selwyn Rees, Andrea and Tony Williams, Chris Olds and Tony Griggs, Pauline and Alan Williams, Chris Williams and Hugh Rowdon and with a half from Captain for the day Anita Butcher playing with husband, Phil.

The annual tripartite match between fellow 1908 Clubs, Mendip, Stoneham and Tidworth took place this year with Tidworth the hosts. Club Captain David Williams took a team of eighteen players, five ladies and thirteen men to compete for the Centenary Trophy. A most enjoyable day was had by all and after a closely fought contest the home team secured a narrow victory with 37 ½ points, Mendip were second with 36 ½ and Stoneham third with 34 points.
