Not reported last week, but alongside the Club Championship there was the Frost Cup competition for best net total over the two days. In third position was Phil Leadbeater, while Dan Allen was second, but the Frost Cup Winner 2019 was young Freddie Lenihan. Well done, Freddie.

The latest running of the Showering Cup attracted 99 entries on a glorious day for golf. Division Three was won by Sean Thatcher with net-70 on countback from Neville Harvey, with veteran Bryan Francis back in the frame in third place with 71.

Division Two went to Dan Allen, following up his good form the previous weekend with a fine 66, with Stephen Pearson second with 67, beating Martin Wilkins on countback.

Division One saw Tom Chapman in third place with 72, Martin Myers was second with 69 losing to the Division winner, Wayne Srawley, on countback. However, the Cup winner was a man very much in-form – five-handicapper, Ben Cox, with an outstanding gross level par score of 71, giving him a net-66 and a win on countback. Well done, Ben, and you are now off 4.1!

A record attendance of 26 Past Captains competed in Mendip’s annual Past Captains’ event with ages ranging from 24 to well into the eighties. With the course in splendid order, lovely weather and good golf played, there was a very convivial atmosphere throughout the day and well into the evening.

An excellent meal was prepared by chef, Ryan, and Emily and her bar team kept things running very smoothly. The winner of the Singles’ Competition was David Williams with 39 points, with Paul Merrett second with 38 and Tony Taylor third with 37 after a triple countback. The Team Event went to David with support from Hugh Glandfield and Terry Pavey.

Mendip Ladies held a very successful open Bowmaker, with 87 competitors from eighteen different Clubs. The winning Visitor Team came from Cumberwell/Cotswold Edge, who scored 83. In

second place was a Team from Bath/Cumberwell with 78 and in third place was a Stockwood/Saltford Team with 77 on countback.

Best Mendip performance came from Pauline Williams/Philippa Brown/ Susy Rudkin with 81 points, just beating Anita Butcher/ Diane Stanton and Sarah Whiting, a Filton member, who scored 80.

The Ladies’ Alliance A Team visited Thornbury with a much-weakened team and went down 3-11. Ladies’ Captain, Marian Speed, gained a half and an excellent win came from Hilary Rowdon, who was playing the course for the first time.

The B Team lost narrowly against Bath, 6-8, with wins from Hilary, again, Anne Hopkins and Anita Butcher. And to complete a trio of losses the Inter-Club Team visited Wedmore and found the home team in fine form. Many close games, but a 1½-5½ defeat, with Margaret Hawker winning her match and Cora Pavey halving.

The Seniors completed the return leg of their annual match against fellow 1908 Club, Tidworth. Using home advantage, they ran out 5-3 winners, with wins coming from Bryan Lewis/Simon Atkinson, Steve Davis/David Garnsworthy, John Stembridge/Jim Mallon, David Pilbeam/Jim Roebuck and Martin Osborne/Alan Snow. This meant over the two legs, the final result was 8-8, so unfortunately Tidworth, as holders, retain the trophy.

The Pro Shop Nearest the Pin this week went Ellen Reakes, with Colin Wiltshire in second place.
