A TOTAL of 123 men competed in the annual running of Mendip Golf Club’s Coronation Cup. Div 3 went to Dave Ashton with a net 67, with Colin Davies 2nd with 71, after count back from Keith Beasley.
Div 2 went to Mark Crook with 67, Chris Butland was 2nd with 68 and Paul Godwin was 3rd with 70, after count back from Paul Merrett and Steve Cox.
Div 1 was won by Jonathan Watts with 69 after count back from Sam Brown with Darrin Vowell 3rd with 72. However, an extraordinary round was produced by John Shakesby playing off a handicap of 23 who carded a net 59. John was only 1 over gross for the front 9. He wins the trophy by eight shots which must be something of a record, very well done John.
The Mid Week Stableford competition saw 59 competing with 25 players equalling or bettering par. Div 3 went to Andy Wells with 43 points after count back from Andy Neeve. Div 2 was won by Craig Robertson with 42 with Brian Smith 2nd with 41 and Jonathan Watts won Div 1 with 37 with Martin Stephens 2nd with 36.
A total of 28lLadies played in the 18 hole Stableford competition, a lower number than normal due to a number of Ladies opting for the 9 hole event in view of the very hot conditions.
Div 1 of the event was won by Linda Papadopoullos with 38 points with Jane Ball 2nd with 37 and Jo Espley 3rd coming in third with 35. Div 2 went to Ann Padley with 37, after count back from Libby Bellew, while Div 3 was won by Pauline Williams with 36. However the overall winner was Jenny Merrett with a very fine 43 points.
Twenty-nine Ladies played in the 9 hole Stableford competition which saw a win for Corinne Durbin in Div 1 with 22 points after count back from Jan Fukuyama with Sue Alcock 3rd with 21. Div 2 went to Caroline Laws with 23 points with Margaret Hawker 2nd with 22 and Eileen Masters was 3rd with 20.
The Ladies Mid Week Stableford saw two fine scores of 44 by Suzie Howe and Sally Humphries with Suzie winning on count back. Lynn Cox was 3rd with 39.
The Ladies ICL team had a narrow defeat against Mendip Spring, wins came from Chris Down and Ann Padley with Carol King and Fiona Hassard gaining halves.
Against the same club the Alliance A team completed a 14-0 win. When all the top players are available, Mendip really does have a formidable team.
The Alliance B team gained an excellent halved match when visiting Weston, with wins coming coming from Pauline Young, Fran Davies and Maureen Charlton with Carol King gaining a very valuable half.
The Ladies ICL team had a further fixture with Orchardleigh which they won 4½ - ½ with wins from Carol King, Anita Butcher and Min Woodward and with halves from Ann Padley, Pippa Brown and Wendy Collins.
In the Somerset Ladies Golf Handicap Championships held at Bath, the winner of the Medal event and the Cairns Cup was Aimee Sawyer and the 9 hole Grass Roots Cup went to Suzie Howe with 18 points after count back.
