Wells Golf’s Stragglers played at Shirehampton. The first pairing, John Baker and John Chillington, had a very tight match, finally losing 3&2.

Terry Searle and Bernard Young won 4&3, with Young apparently nearly having two holes in one. Gary Leigh and Ron Davey lost just one down. Steve Porter and Pete Michel again had a tight match and were finally edged out, losing one down. The final pairing of Mike McKay and Craig McConnell found the going tough.

The Wells Ladies competed in the Ping Four Ball Better Ball competition, with pairs battling it out to represent the club later in the year. In first place, on countback, with 35 points, were Linda Wright and Diane Ramsay and the runners-up were Tina Davies and Cath Levell.

The Mixed Friendly against Mendip Springs was played in true spirit, with good competition on both sides ending in a draw. Jill Bocquet finished her game with an eagle on the eighteenth and Beryl Carson celebrated her birthday on the same day.

Fifty players took part in the Seniors’ Men’s Medal and it was particularly pleasing to see some new names playing.

Martin Barnes shot a fine 74 (nett 68), making the most of the calm conditions, but lost out for second place to Derek Wilson’s 88 (nett 68) on countback. Mike McKay shot an outstanding nett 66 to take first place and a thoroughly deserved win.

Wells Seniors had wins against Orchardleigh at home by 4&3 and against Enmore away by the same margin. They played Mendip Spring at home and recorded a strong win by 6&1. Bill O’Callaghan and Chris Strickland were three down with four to play and managed to win all four holes for a memorable result.

The winner of the Men’s May Stableford was Charlie Lewis, with an incredible 41 points off a six handicap.

The Men’s First team struggled with difficult conditions in their match against Tracy Park, finishing with 1.5 points from the encounter. Their next match versus Knowle saw Will Thompson and Rob Payne win their match, and though the Knowle course was a pleasure to play, the Wells team gained just one point from the fixture.
