Thursday, 2nd May was a stroke play qualifying competition for the Somerset County Dickinson Cup. Twenty-four Farrington Park Ladies entered the competition, hoping to have the honour of representing Farrington Park in the next round.

The weather had reverted to unseasonable low temperatures, with a stiff wind, which coupled with essential work being done to the greens, did nothing for the playing confidence of the

majority of the players.

Seven birdies were scored overall, with two spot birdies coming from Evie Thatcher (8th) and Pauline Young (15th). This week, there were three divisions playing to reflect the wide range of handicaps. Division Three winner was Jill Holland (nett-78), Lesley Stone (nett-85) and Maureen Goodsir (nett-87), took the second and third places. Division Two scoring was close; Jane Ball’s nett-82 just held off Fiona Hassard (nett 83) and Lally Gibson (nett 84).

Lena Warren’s nett-77 took second place in Division One, one shot better than Jackie Walker’s nett-78. The winner and this year’s qualifier for the next round of the Dickinson Cup was Evie Thatcher, with a nett seventy. Her round included two birdies and six pars and earned her a handicap cut for the third week in a row – a fantastic achievement.
