Another busy week at Mendip Golf Club to report on, despite the continuing bad weather.

Forty-five pairings played in the Captain’s Trophy Medal competition and this saw a fine win for Troy Chivers and George Hobbs with a net 61. In second place came father and son pairing, Phil and Matt Bendall with 64. In third place after countback were Pete Walsh and John Masters with 65 and Simon Wynn and Darren Darby-Jones were fifth. In sixth place, with 66 again after countback were Kelvin Adams and Paul Godwin.

The Mid Week Stableford saw fifty-four competitors and best scores of 38 from Matthew McKay and Michal Rokitowski. John Toull carded 37 points with James Baughan and Mark Necker scoring 36 points.

The Ladies of Mendip were really busy and despite two Alliance matches and a Ladies Friendly in the week, forty three still played in a variety of events on the Tuesday Ladies morning.

Thirty-one played in the eighteen hole County Qualifying Stableford. Division One went to Anita Butcher with 32 and Anne Hopkins was second, with 29, after a triple tie. Division Two went to Carol Howerd with 32 and it is so good to see Carol back on the course after several years absence. Dee Garnsworthy was second with 27. Division Three was won by Suzy Ruskin with 29, with new member, Louise Scott, second with 28. Welcome to Mendip, Louise.

Seven ladies contested the Medal event and that was won by Edwina Willis with a net eighty, with Jenny Merrett second with 81 and Fran Davies was third, after countback, with 84. And finally five

ladies played a nine hole Stableford that saw a win for Daphne Irons with fifteen points with Elaine Richardson second with fourteen.

The Ladies Alliance A Team went down to a narrow defeat 6–8 when entertaining Bath. There were wins for Jinhee Page and Fran Davies and halved matches for Chris Olds and Marian Speed.

The Alliance B Team visited Orchardleigh and the team suffered a heavy defeat with only Anita Butcher gaining a victory. Still, two new recruits to the team, Carol Curtis and Chris Atkinson, had their first taste of Alliance golf – well done, ladies.

An amazing one hundred and twenty three Seniors competed for the Bill Smith Cup event.

Mendip continues to prove a good test with only six players bettering a par score. Outstanding was the winner, Derek Padley, with 43 points – well clear of the remainder of the field. He was not only awarded the Cup but a 4 shot handicap reduction! Second was Phil Bendall, with 38 points after a four-way tie. Robert Marquiss was third, Ian Vincent fourth, Roland Greenaway fifth and Jeremy Cooke sixth.

The Veterans prize went to Tony Williams with 33 points with Peter Rumming second with 32 after countback from Tony Whitmarsh.
