The final of the Dickinson Cup was played between Mike Vincent and Mike Magrath over 36 holes. The day was dry, if cloudy, and Vincent took an early lead in the first match to complete the eighteen holes, one hole up.

The second match followed the same pattern, with Vincent always ahead by a few holes, but Magrath put in a strong finish to draw level on the seventeenth. Pressure and nerves got to both players as they scored seven apiece to draw the eighteenth along with the match. So, onto the 37th hole, with both players being on the edge of the green for two. Vincent’s better short game, however, saw him par the hole to win a very competitive, close match overall by one hole.

The Seniors’ Captain’s Away Day, at Oake Manor, was an excellent day out which was much enjoyed. The course was in very good condition, the sun shone, the meal was excellent and the company superb!

The scores were equally good, and playing better ball stableford in teams of two, sixteen of the pairs scored forty points or above! The winners of the Seniors’ Captain’s Away Day shield were Roger Webber and Barrie Fox, with an amazing 50 points. Just pipped into second place were Martin Barnes and Jon Mackness, with an impressive 49 points. Third, with 45 points, were Ron Johnson and Seniors’ Captain John Moxon.

Prizes for nearest the pin went to Colin Webber on the par three, fourth, Nick Carter on the par three sixteenth and Tony Duffin (nearest in two on the par four, eleventh). Twos pots went to Colin Webber, Nick Carter, Mike Gee, Ian Mills, Ron Johnson, Martin Barnes and Dave Hayward.

The result of the Seniors’ away match against Shirehampton was a three-all draw, with some emphatic wins for Wells pairs, largely thanks to impressive individual performances. George Davis and Ron Hancock, Peter Leverick and John Watson and Dave Hayward and John Moxon all won. An honourable overall draw seemed a fitting end to a good day’s golf.

Wells’ Past Club Captains held their annual Invitation Day on a wet, miserable afternoon, so just twelve holes were played, resulting in a tight outcome. Captain of Captains Steve Rowse and his partner David Taylor (Wedmore) stole the winning prize, on count back, with 27 points from Philip Slater and his guest Adrian Brooking-Clark (Mendip).
