Following their successful retention of the Somerset Seniors’ Bowl, some of the Wells team played in the Somerset Golf Union Seniors’ Stableford Championship.
Approximately eighty players took part in this annual event. The conditions were reflected in the scores: Nick Carter won his age group category with only 33 points. Glen Crocker, with 36 points, came second overall, losing on countback to teammate Nick Wilson – also with 36 points.
The Wells team which included Bill McCollum, amassed 105 points from their best three out of four scores to win the team event by 12 points.
The Captain’s Roll-Up came to an end for this season with blustery winds, which made scoring difficult, but the winner on the day was Mike Magrath, who won a Taylor-Made putter. Bill Levell came home as the runner-up on the day. The accumulator competition was won by Cath Levell and the runner-up was Gill Magrath.
The Cyder Cup was held over two days – one at Wells and the other at Farrington. The overall winners of this prestigious event were Paul Cullen and Terry Pearce. The best Members’ pair on Day One were Ian Burr and Mark Wintersgill. The best Mixed/Ladies’ pair on Day One were Abby Gray and Cath Levell. On Day Two, Paul Cox and Geoff Knight were the best members’ pair, with Glynis Slater and Tina Davis the best Mixed/Ladies’ pair. There was a hole-in-one for a Mendip player on the 10th hole at Wells!
The winners of the Men’s Daily Mail foursomes are Simon Elliott and David Sheppard, who will represent Wells in the national competition.
The Ladies’ Pamela Manuel Trophy was a medal competition played in tricky conditions, which was reflected in the scores. Jill Bocquet won the trophy with nett-78. Erica Klim was the second Silver player and Janice White was the first Bronze player.
