FOR their latest away day, members of the Seniors’ section of Fosseway Golf Club paid a visit to Eriestoke Golf Club. Phil Winsley came out on top with an impressive total of 39 points followed by Seniors’ secretary Alan Jones, who was on 37 points, with competition secretary Chris Appleton a further point behind on 36 points.

Appleton also took the prize for the longest drive. Paul Ellis was nearest the pin while Andy Flagg was the only player to achieve a two during the competition.

Fosseway have had a successful start to their series of social matches but they came down with a bump following defeats away to new opponents Henstridge and traditional rivals Whitley. Fosseway have had a good record against the Wiltshire side in recent times but a 6-0 defeat more than made amends for Whitley who would have been delighted with the result.

The Seniors found it hard going in the Groundsman’s Trophy which was played at Fosseway but in the end close friends Paul Tripp and Paul Ellis beat the rest of the field playing some fine golf coming in with a total of 35 points in the Foursomes Stableford event. One shot behind came Shaun Goodwin and Frank Reeves and Mike Weeks and Noel Chatfield with Goodwin and Reeves claiming second place on countback.

Appleton is playing good golf at the moment and he was a very deserved winner in the August medal with a very impressive gross score of 73 (nett 64). John Bendle is another player who is starting to feature in competitions near the top of the pile and he also scored a nett 64 but he was eventually beaten on countback.

At the moment there seems no let-up in the hot weather.
