Fans were still arriving as the game got underway on a glorious Spring afternoon and the visitors were soon in action when an effort from Joe Cooper crashed into the side netting of Alfie Kelsey’s goal. Welton’s response saw Courtney Charles hold up the ball in front of goal before playing in Jordan Savery who fired his shot straight into the arms of Radstock keeper, Jack Scrivens.
However, Welton took the lead in the sixth minute when excellent play down the right from Will saw him deliver a pin point cross into the mix were Charles was on hand to slot home from close range. Welton continued to press for more goals and Lewis Hunt roared into the Radstock area only to be denied at the last moment by a last ditch tackle. Scrivens’ was called into action again when he safely gathered Cam Allen’s shot on target.
Radstock looked dangerous on the break and a good attacking move by Ali Sen saw him test Kelsey with a low drive. As half-time approached, Welton were pressing their visitors for the all-important second goal and further good play from Charles saw him set up Lewis Russell and his first time effort was well saved by Scrivens.
The second half began with Welton pressing their visitors, a corner on the right was met by Joe Garland, whose firm shot was cleared for another corner which was met this time by Joe Ellis, who headed over. Gould then went close with a glancing header as Welton continued the onslaught on the Radstock goal.
Welton were stunned in the sixtieth minute when a long clearance from Scrivens saw the ball land at the feet of Morgan Skipp, who got it under control and fired in a cracking shot to equalise for the visitors.
Welton regained their composure after this setback and Charles let fly from distance only to see Scrivens pull off an outstanding save to deny Welton a second goal. Welton were not to be denied and on 68 minutes it duly arrived. Charles was found in space, he held up the ball again before setting up Russell, who made no mistake as he drilled his shot into the net. This deflated the visitors and five minutes later Charles was brought down in the area and referee Salvage had no hesitation in awarding Welton a penalty. Up stepped Russell who made no mistake with his spot kick.
Just before the full-time whistle blew, Welton made it four with an excellent individual goal from Lewis Hunt, who twisted and turned in the area before firing in a low shot into the corner of the net.
Special mention has to be made to Courtney Charles who was outstanding up front for Welton and rightly given Man of the Match.
The game was a great advert for local football, played in the right spirit by both sides and well refereed by the officials. Bob Allard
