WHAT a weekend it was in Glasgow for Midsomer Norton TAGB Tae Kwon-Do at the World Championship.
After more than a year of preparation, 13 of our students stepped onto the mats at the big event, held at the iconic Braehead Arena on the 19th and 20th of July - and they didn’t just show up . . .they shone!
With more than 1,750 competitors from more then 20 countries, including Canada, USA, Australia, Poland, Germany, Switzerland and a brave refugee team from Ukraine, this truly was a world class event.
Scotland set the tone with an unforgettable opening ceremony, and from there it was two days of intense competition, sportsmanship and celebration of martial arts. Our students have been working towards this moment for well over a year. From extra training sessions to regional and national competitions, technical workshops to sparring sessions, they’ve put in the work consistently.
That kind of effort doesn’t always show up on medals but in Glasgow it did! We are proud to share that our club brought home 21 medals, including 3 World Champions. But more then that we brought home memories, experience and renewed seanse of pride in what we do.
Medal highlights: Ms Fober- bronze, individual sparring. Lucy Barr-gold individual patterns, gold team patterns. Holly Lane- bronze individual sparring. Stefan Barr- bronze individual sparring, silver team sparring. Josh Longworth- silver team sparring. Sydné Bell- silver individual patterns, silver team sparring, bronze team patterns. We are incredibly proud of every single student who took part. It’s not a small thing to step onto the mats in front of a panel of judges, crowds of spectators and opponents you’ve never seen before. Just qualifying and having a courage to compete at such a high level is an achievement in itself. As much as we can accomplish inside the four walls of our Dojang, we grow even more when we step outside of it.
This championships wasn’t just about competing; it was about meeting martial artists from all over the world, learning new perspectives and realising that we are part of something much bigger. To our team: you’ve made your club proud. But if you want to go further, if you want to stand on the podium again, or simply become the best version of yourself, you have to keep training with purpose. Every action matters. Every session counts. The benefits come when you give everything, not just when it’s easy but especially when it’s hard. Feeling inspired?
Whether your looking to build confidence, learn self defence, improve fitness, or be part of supportive community, Tae Kwon-Do is for everyone. We welcome beginners of all ages and offer a free taster session so you can see what we’re all about.
