Mendip Hockey Club kicked-off their new season in fine, if somewhat soggy, style on Saturday, with the annual intra-club Hockey Fest tournament.
Some forty players, plus a handful of hardy supporters, turned out at a rain-drenched Norton Hill Astro to take part in a six-a-side mixed tournament. Hot favourites, the
yellow team, led by Men’s First Team Captain, Max Spalton and Ladies’ First Team Captain, April Callow, started brightly, but were ultimately edged out by eventual winners, the red team.
Notable highlights of the event included three inter-generational teams, with Hayley Young and son, Liam, stepping out for the green team, Steve Smith and daughter, Jess, in the white team, and Brenda Scott and daughter, Jasmine, representing the blues.
Much fun was had, before the players retired to Midsomer Norton Cricket Club for some well-deserved post-match hospitality.
On Saturday, both the Ladies’ and Men’s sections begin their pre-season friendlies.
The Ladies First team are home to Old Bristolians at 10.30 a.m., Ladies Second team are home to Frome, 1.30 p.m. and the Ladies Third team away to Winscombe.
The Men’s First team also have a friendly fixture at home, pushback at 12 noon.
Training for the men continues on Wednesday evenings at Norton Hill Astro at 7.30 p.m.
Ladies training takes place on Thursdays at 7.30 p.m. and junior training commences on Sunday, 11th September.
