THERE is a spring tradition at Camerton and Peasedown Croquet Club that, once the club’s four lawns have had a customary winter rest, there is a social event to celebrate the new season.
This year the club held a Progressive Doubles tournament - renowned for descending into mayhem and confusion as your partner changes after every game; it’s a bit like country dancing but in the fresh air. It makes for an excellent social competition where players meet and play with lots of different people. In 2026 this competition was won by Lynn Wulcko.
Early in April Lynn’s winning streak continued when she entered her very first D-Level play tournament at Budleigh Salterton, - and won it! She triumphed 7-1 in the final but, not satisfied with that result, she entered the C-level tournament the following day and came a creditable 3rd, beating several better players on the way. There was also a medal, at the Budleigh Salterton tournament, for CPCC member Phil Hendy who won the Plate competition in the B-Level tournament, winning five of six matches.
On April 24 the Camerton and Peasedown Handicap ‘A’ team travelled to Nailsea for their first league match of 2026. A full team from CPCC were met by just four Nailsea players, so progress through the required 20 games was protracted. CPCC were winners in the morning and by mid-afternoon had achieved 10 wins overall ensuring that, whatever happened later, a drawn match was secured.
The day had started cool but by early afternoon temperatures had soared to a seasonal high for 2026. The setting at Nailsea was glorious and, even though there was time pressure to complete the match, there was much sun-basking in the companionable atmosphere. By late afternoon a drawn match was looking inevitable but, considering it was the first of the season, CPCC captain Marion Button was ‘OK’ with that.
