The fields of Ston Easton have a remarkable make over into a racecourse for the annual Mendip Farmers’ Point to Point which took place on Sunday. This year was blessed with good going, good entries and a dry day which resulted in excellent racing with some close finishes, a bigger crowd than usual to cheer the horses on.

The first race, the Ford Fuels confined, there were ten starters, local interest focused on Cath Penny, from Litton who horse Buck’s Bond finished in second place. The second race, the Alec Jarrett open maiden, was won by Samphire Boy owned by Peter Hart of Chew Magna. Peter has owned some good race horses, one, Cornish Sett ran in the Grand National a few years ago.

The third race, the Uphill ladies open the winner of this race was the Ciara Fry trained and owned Triangular. Throughout the day best turned out awards were being judged by Celia Drewett of Stowey, who also made the presentation of the Tiarks Cup to winning connections. In this race the prize went to Triangular’s groom.

The sixth and final race of the day, the R M Penny open maiden, had 17 declared runners and was split into two sections. The winner of the second section was Rouge Devils which is jointly owned by Sir Alex Ferguson. This win gave Will Biddick a double for the afternoon. Mrs Cath Penny presented the trophy to Will who had ridden her horse earlier in the afternoon.
