Blessed with fine weather, the course was presented in fine fettle with the greens in particular running fast and true. Young Sam Scriven ran the Beat the Pro competition on the eighth, there was a putting event and free cake in the clubhouse. The winning team were Simon Atkinson, Kevin Carmody, Bryan Lewis and David Pilbeam with 109 points, four ahead of the Old Faithful’s team of Brian Francis, Eric Jordan, John Hargraves who were joined by young Stephen Pearson. The Best Individual card was returned by Julian Pallister with 42 points with Malcolm Dawkins second with 40 points. However, the biggest winner on the day was the Heart Foundation with £2,800 raised at the latest count. Well done Steve.

84 Men played in the St James Place National Pro Am Qualifier. Winning with an excellent 41 points was Rob Ware who now goes forward to play with Director of Golf Stuart Disney in the Regional Final at Cumberwell in August. Division 1 was won by Mark Necker after count back from Wayne Spencer. John Ellis won division 2 with 39 points with Matt Blackmore 2nd with 38 and Mr Consistent Alan Evans-Jones won division 3 with 38 points after count back from James Pitchell.

With a Ladies club match on the same day, there were smaller fields than usual for their weekly stableford events. Chris Down won the 18 hole event with 36 with Jan Fukuyama 2nd with 35 after count back from Margaret Allen. The 9 hole event went to Caroline Simper with 16 points with Mary Ainsworth 2nd with 14. Meanwhile the Inter Club Team were playing at Wheathill but went down to a 2-5 defeat. Mendip’s wins came from Chris Williams and Margaret Hawker.

The Alliance B team visited Orchardleigh and gained a good halved match 7-7. Winning for Mendip were Anne Hopkins, Anita Butcher and, Jan Fukuyama with Chris Olds gaining the all important half.

The Seniors travelled to Knowle and came away with a fine win 5½-1½. Wins came from Brian Lewis (3 over gross!)/Mike Snaith, Roland Greenway/Nick Inskip, Steve Davis/Selwyn Rees, Gareth Collier/John Scott, Stephen Cox/Jim Scott and a hard won half from Gary Quin/Peter Rumming.

The Seniors Avalon Team visited Tall Pines, the match being played in extremely difficult conditions with wild winds and heavy showers. The home side coped better and ran out easy winners. Gary Quin and Team Captain David Braithwaite gained a half point.

And yet more good news on the Junior front with 14 year old Connie Cox gaining the best net in the Saltford Junior Open and following this up with winning an English Golf EG event with 42 points at Kendleshire. Tony Williams
