Winning with a fine net sixty four was young Ben Roberts, a point ahead of Roland Greenaway who in turn was one ahead of Sean Thatcher. Three handicapper, Ben Cox was fourth with sixty eight, with Andy Humphries continuing his fine form at fifth with sixty nine after countback. The Mid Week Medal went to Lee Hurst with a net seventy one, Tom Black was second with seventy two after countback from Tom Howe and Martin Myers.
The Avalon C Team went down narrowly when visiting Minehead 2-3 with wins from Scott Butland/Tom Black and David Graham/John Ollerton who was making his debut for the team. The Avalon A team entertained Oake and ran out 3-2 winners. Successful for Mendip were Ryan Sainsbury/Matt Lambert, Rob Edney/PaulLewis and Tom Chapman/Spencer Pocock. Mendip played Bath in the second round of the Somerset Rose Bowl and registered an excellent 4-1 success. Winners for Mendip were Dean Lewer/Tom Black, Tom Chapman/Rob Cook, Ryan Sainsbury/Malcolm Srawley and Michal Rokitowski/John Harvey.
Mendip were pleased to host the Somerset Past Captains vs Hampshire fixture which ended in an honourable half. Men’s captain, Alan Roper and three other Mendip past captains were in the team and Alan was delighted with some of the comments received regarding the two new holes and indeed the post match meal.
Nearest the Pin competitions were won by Cliff Hall with Scott Butland second and Steve Davis with Tom Black second.
Twenty one teams played in the Mendip Ladies Open Bowmaker with the majority being visitors. The first visitor team with eighty one points came from Saltford/Burnham with a team from Isle of Wedmore/Taunton and Pickeridge/Enmore second with seventy seven points. Best member/visitor team was Ann Padley with Saltford partners with seventy eight and best members team was Sandie Roper/Susy Rudkin/Abby Gray with sixty nine.
The Ladies Friendly team visited Bath and were beaten 1-3 with a win for Anita Butcher/Julia Phillips. Mendip ladies found the Bath rough very demanding and they had to give a lot of shots in all the games. The Alliance B had a fine 8-6 Home win over Long Ashton with wins for Edwina Willis, Chris Olds, Lulu Carolan and Anita Butcher. The A Team visited Filton with three of their top four players missing and suffered a narrow defeat 3-4 with wins from Aimee Sawyer, Fran Davies and Jenny Merrett. Thirty ladies supported Lady Captain, Allison Rumming with her away day at Cumberwell. The course, whilst demanding, was in fine order and all enjoyed the occasion. The Ladies Granny Trophy was won by Jan Fukuyama with a fine forty points.
Ninety one seniors played in the Bill Smith Cup which saw a very close finish. Senior’s captain, Steve Davis was third with thirty nine points on countback from Mike Lill with Henry Banks, the long time leader in the Clubhouse, with forty points in second place. However, he was beaten on countback by Andy Humphries who after six holes had seven points. However, a back nine of twenty four saw him home which shows that you should never give up! Well done Andy. The Veteran’s Prize went to Alan Evans Jones with thirty nine points with Bob Smallcombe second with thirty eight.
The Seniors Friendly team saw home wins against Sherborne 5-1 and Weston 4½-1½. The Seniors Avalon team won a close battle with Worlebury 3-2 with wins from David Jukes/Nigel Brokenshire, Simon Brand/David Braithwaite and Kevin Carmody/Chris Betenson. Tony Williams
