The Coronation Cup saw a full entry and some fine scoring, especially from some of the low handicap players. Division Three was won by Jonathan Cummings, with an excellent net 67, followed by Club President, Colin Davies, with seventy, and after countback, David Ashton in third place, with 71. Division Two was won by David Braithwaite, with net seventy, and then there was a seven-way tie on 71, which after much sorting out, resulted in Will Waddington in second place, with Phil Butcher in third.
Division One was won by last year's Captain, Duncan Offer, with net 68 on countback, from Matthew Tabor, with Martin Myers maintaining his fine form with 69 in third place, again after countback. However, the cup winner was young Jordan Vaughan, with an outstanding net 65, leading to a handicap reduction to seven.
The club's 36-hole open event, the Mendip Vase, saw almost a full entry, although visiting team numbers were disappointing. Best Visiting Team of S. Phelps and K. Brimble finished with net 138.6. Best Members Team, with net 136.4, were Club Chairman, Ian Fairclough, playing with Tim Lamb, but the overall winners were Mendip members, Brian Say and Paul Apfelstedt, with net 134.2.
The Mendip A Team, in Division Four of the Avalon League, entertained Tall Pines and were rewarded with a 3½–1½ win, which keeps them well in touch with the top of the league. There were wins for Paul Reakes and Alan Fussell, Ian Fairclough and Jordan Vaughan and new team members, Simon Jefferies and Andrew Elsworth. A half was also gained by Trevor Oats and Rick Kefford. Not to be outdone, the Mendip B Team also gained a 3½–1½ victory over Worlebury in their league match. Well captained on the day by Paul Smith, the team benefitted from his absence through injury! There were wins for Merv Vaughan and Will Waddington, Tim Lamb and Rob Ware, Matt Tabor and John Brooksbank, with a half gained by Duncan Offer and David Braithwaite.
On the Ladies front, their competitions will now be run in three divisions. In the latest Stableford, the newly-created Bronze Division was won by Karen Cookson, with a splendid 37 points, ten points clear of Anne Collins and Elaine Richardson, with Anne second after countback. Silver Division was won by Chris Williams, with thirty points on countback from Nola Russell, with Di Stanton, third, with 28 points. Silver Division saw a close run thing, with Jean Padfield winning with 35 points, beating Chris Olds and Edwina Willis, who carded 34 points, Chris second after count back.
In a second Ladies Stableford event, Copper Division was won by Caroline Simpler, with 31, with Carol Mosley second, with 27, and Elaine Richardson, third, with 26. Bronze Division was won by Sally Scott, with 34 points, Margaret Allen was second, with 31, and Carol Curtis, third, with 28. Excellent scoring in Silver Division saw a win for Lyn Cox, a new Mendip Lady member, with 38 points, beating Sandy Nott into second place, with 37, and Jean Padfield, third, with 34.
Mendip Ladies run in the Somerset County Rogers Cup event came to an end when they lost 5–2 to last year's winners, a very strong team from Lansdown.
Mendip Seniors have been busy over the past two weeks with three matches. Against Bristol and Clifton, at home, they recorded a fine 6–1 victory, with wins for John Stembridge and Chris Alexander, John Padfield and Colin Davies, Steve Creese and Merlyn Saunders, Henry Banks and Keith Beasley, Alan Roper and Bob Davies and Bryan Roberts-Wray and John Brooksbank. The team followed this up with a 5½ –1½ win at home to Orchardleigh. This time there were wins for Doug Thompson and Chris Alexander, Geoff Mosley and Terry Carter, Mike Lill and Jim Mallon, Bob Smallcombe and Bob Davies, Alan Fussell and Phil Bendall, with a half gained by Terry Russell and John Brooksbank.
However, the third match proved to be one too many when Mendip lost away to Tidworth, 1½–6½. Mendip's points came from a win from Colin Davies and David Pilbeam and a half from Keith Gadsden and Simon Atkinson.
The Seniors also ran their monthly Stableford event which attracted an entry of 65 competitors. Division Two was won by Julian Pallister, with an excellent forty points, well clear of John Treeby in second place, with 36, and Andy Griffiths in third place, beaten on countback. David Collins was fourth, with 35 points.
Division One saw a return to form from Chris Bryant to win with 39 points, with Stephen Creese, second, with 36, after a three-way tie.
