Despite occupying differing ends of the league table, the gap between the teams was much less evident on the pitch during this match.

Lowly-placed Mendip started the match brightly, and were the better side throughout the first half. They played excellent passing and moving hockey, keeping the lion’s share of possession. A wayward defensive pass from the home team was pounced upon by centre forward Carol Holmes, who calmly drove into the D to fire home past the keeper, and put Mendip in front midway through the half.

The home team were certainly made to work, and when they did venture into the Mendip defensive half they were met by super-solid defending from Sarah Whittaker, who stopped them in their tracks. Her efforts throughout the match ensured she was Mendip’s very well deserved player of the match.

Despite athletic goalkeeping from one Bodman Harris, Cheddar managed to sneak a goal in on the stroke of half-time, bringing the teams level, which did dampen Mendip’s spirits somewhat.

Cheddar came out strong in the second half, and by packing the midfield were able to put much more pressure on the Mendip defence. They managed to put two more goals past Mendip during the second half to secure victory.

Despite losing, there are lots of positives that Mendip can take from this match, and if they can play like they did in the first half for the remainder of their matches, then their position in this league will be secure.

Next week, Mendip are at home in Midsomer Norton for a 1.30 p.m. start against Redland UWE 3rds at Norton Hill School.
