Mendip Ladies Seconds 4 Yeovil and Sherborne Ladies Thirds 2

Mendip Hockey’s Ladies Second team took to their home pitch looking to bounce back after their defeat last week. The first half began, and the home team came out very strong, and despite missing a couple of key players, were able to link together well to move the ball up the pitch.

The hard work paid off midway into the first half, when left midfield, Liv Taylor, dribbled past the opposition to find herself an opportunity to bury the ball from the top of the D, making it 1–0 to Mendip. Looking to keep the momentum going, Amy McGowan managed to add her name to the scoresheet, by scoring a very similar goal to the first one – another super strike from the edge of the area. Yeovil and Sherborne were not deterred by the home team’s strong start, and managed to halve the deficit when a shot at goal was deflected past the keeper, making it 2–1.

Mendip knew that they had to work even harder in the second half, and continued to turn defence into attack to pressure the Yeovil defence. Jess Baird was particularly influential in this, distributing the ball to allow the speedy forwards to test the visitors time and again. Mendip were awarded their first short corner, and it was Baird who scored the third goal from this and earned herself Player of the Match for her impressive play throughout.

Mendip had another short corner and their well-worked routine resulted in a fourth goal from Connie Glover slotting the ball in at the back post. Yeovil and Sherborne managed to break away in attack towards the end of the game with a second goal.

This week, Mendip play Weymouth in a re-arranged fixture, looking to break into the top half of the table before the Christmas break. The Ladies’ First team were held to a 0–0 draw, with the Ladies’ Third team recording a 2–0 win to Weston-super-Mare. The Men’s First team returned to winning ways with a 4–0 win at home to Bristol University. The Seconds recorded their best result of the season so far with an 11–0 demolition of Westbury.
