Mendip made the most of a beautiful Autumn morning on Saturday, putting in a hard-working and cohesive performance to defeat a previously-unbeaten Old Bristolians side.

Old B’s started well, drawing some great tackles from Mendip’s Player of the Match, Cherilyn Carey. Hayley Young, Sammy Chivers and Anna Swift were also on-hand to block and intercept wave after wave of Old B’s attacks.

Mendip gradually found their rhythm, and established a great passing game. One such move down the right saw Katie Riches force a save from the Old B’s keeper, before Georgie Kelly nipped in for the rebound to put Mendip ahead.

In the second half, Mendip’s Jess Smith and Megan Carey really began to trouble Old B’s with their pace and movement off the ball. The lead was doubled when Cherilyn Carey’s through-ball was nudged on by Young, and deflected in by Kelly.

Old B’s skilful and experienced players threw everything they had at Mendip in the closing stages, earning a series of penalty corners, but the Mendip defence stayed strong to the end.

Mendip take a break from League action this week, returning on Saturday, 3rd November with a potential banana skin, away to Taw Valley in Bideford. Carrie Tiley

JASPERS 0 MENDIP LADIES 2nds 8

On a lovely, sunny autumn afternoon, Mendip travelled to Winterbourne International Academy to play Jaspers. Mendip dominated from the start, settling well into the game.

After a strong period of play, the first goal came by way of a strong shot in the D, which deflected in off a defender. By half-time, Mendip had scored a further three goals, leaving the score line at 4-0.

In the second half, Mendip continued to play some excellent hockey, with short, sharp passes, leading to four further goals.

Jaspers did rally in the last ten minutes, gaining numerous short corners, but Mendip’s defence stood strong, ensuring they didn’t concede. Goalkeeper, Danielle Seymour, played well all game, making some key saves and enabling Mendip to keep a clean sheet.

At the final whistle, the score stood at 8-0, securing Mendip’s first win of the season. In two weeks’ time, Mendip are at home in their next League match, hoping to continue their form as they take on Old Bristolians.
