THE WET weather continues to cause nightmares for the organisers of the competitions in the Seniors section of Fosseway Golf Club but at least the quarter-finals of the Guerwyn Thomas Cup and the Winter League have been able to take place.
Chris Appleton and John Cooper came out on top in the qualifying round of the Guerwyn Thomas Cup but in a complete reversal of fortunes the pair, who just squeezed into the last eight, Anthony Gregory and Mike Weeks comprehensively won their match 5&4.
There was a much closer contest between Shaun Goodwin and Gerry Rowell and Andy Flagg and Martyn Cuer with the former pair eventually winning on the second play-off hole.
Seniors secretary Alan Jones reached the quarter-finals of both the Guerwyn Thomas Cup and the Winter League but an accident at home forced him to withdraw from both competitions. His misfortune provided a lifeline for Paul Trigg who came in at the last moment to partner Bob Townsend and in another close contest Trigg’s birdie on the last hole saw them defeat Malcolm Emery and Phil Winsley.
Rex Wyatt and Chris Champion are the fourth semi-finalists after Graham Edgell and Mike Ricketts were forced to withdraw.
The Winter League saw Trigg progress after being drawn against the unfortunate Jones. In the other contests Winsley beat Cyril Blacker on the last hole, Emery had the better of Allen Cheney and Goodwin became the fourth semi-finalist after defeating Cuer.
On a rare couple of dry days Gregory put in a fine performance to win the January medal with a nett score of 62. He went out in 37 and came back in 39 shots with two birdies and eight pars. Edgell was also in good form, recording a nett 64 to finish second. Cuer, Winsley and Champion all had nett 68s but Cuer came third on countback.
