MENDIP LADIES 2nds 5 GILLINGHAM 0
After a very wet week, Mendip Ladies had a storm of a game playing Gillingham, and managed to gain three more points on the board with a great win!
The ball play started frantically from both teams, with neither being able to hold possession for more than a small amount of time. As everyone began to concentrate more, the real play commenced, with both teams putting up a strong battle to protect their goal. In the latter quarter of the first half, Mendip finally got on the scoreboard with a swift, short-corner strike from defender, Jess Baird.
After a stern half-time team talk from Captain, Jackie Browning, Mendip came out much stronger and quickly fought their way into the opposition’s D, with Jackie herself hitting home from a very well-struck shot to make it 2-0 to Mendip.
The excellent play continued from there, with both Mendip and Gillingham using their skills to create some great chances, but the keepers managed to stay strong. However, Mendip soon managed to break their opposition’s defence once again, after a shot was first saved but then picked up and fumbled into the goalmouth by Emily Sparkes, who gained the third goal.
Mendip’s next attack came soon after with a fantastic J-run from defender, Grace Harding, where the ball was then plucked from the air and struck firmly onto the backboard by Connie Glover to earn them a stable score of 4-0.
Despite both teams tiring Mendip carried on, as strong and tenacious as they first came out, to finalise the game with a break-through couple of passes up the pitch, and Sally Stanford converting the last shot of the game into a goal, leaving Mendip 5-0 up over Gillingham and a well-deserved win for the table.
