MENDIP LADIES 6 TAW VALLEY 0

The first of Mendip’s two weekend fixtures saw them entertain winless Taw Valley.

The visitors put up a valiant defensive effort in the first half, defending deep and making life difficult for Mendip. A single goal separated the teams at half-time.

In the second half, Taw began to tire, and Mendip were able to exert their superiority, scoring five further goals. The scorers were Hayley Bullock (2), Maddy Collins (2), Hayley Young and Katie Riches, with Collins and Captain, April Callow, sharing the Player of the Match plaudits for their impressive running, both on and off the ball.

MENDIP LADIES 3 WESTON-SUPER-MARE 2

On Sunday, Mendip completed their winning weekend with a hard-earned victory over Weston-super-Mare.

A super Hayley Young goal gave Mendip a first-half lead, before Weston equalised and then edged ahead just after half-time. Player of the Match, Katie Riches, scored to draw Mendip level, before a composed finish from Hayley Bullock secured the win.

These two excellent results see Mendip draw level on points with the teams in second and third position in Central Division.

This Saturday, Mendip face table-topping Clifton Robinsons at Chew Valley at 10.30 a.m.

Mendip Seconds travelled to Old Bristolians for a late game on Saturday, optimistic for a win that would allow Mendip to leapfrog their

opponents in the League.

However, it was not meant to be, and it was Old B’s who soon overloaded the Mendip defence, putting three balls past the keeper within the first twenty minutes of play.

Mendip’s spirit was not broken, and the team battled and found their form. Mendip’s persistence paid off when a driving run through midfield from Captain, Jackie Browning, culminated in a cross into the D, finding striker, and Player of the Match, Connie Glover, who ensured the ball found the back of the Old B’s net. The play continued to be in Mendip’s favour, although it was Old B’s who managed to score one more goal before the half-time whistle.

The second half saw a tiring Old B’s face a determined Mendip side looking to come away with a scoreline more reflective of the equality of the teams. Mendip’s pressure in attack was rewarded with a penalty stroke when Old B’s resorted to using a foot to stop a ball on the goal line. Defender Sarah Whittaker calmly stepped up to push the ball firmly against the backboard to bring the score to 4-2.

The fire was burning brightly in the Mendip team, but a number of contentious decisions hampered Mendip’s flow – tempers soared and a card was shown. The battle raged on, only to see Old B’s score one final goal before the full-time whistle.

Next week sees Mendip travel to Firebrands in search of an elusive three points.
