DEVIZES 1 MENDIP LADIES FIRST 1

Mendip saw their lead at the top of East Division reduced to five points on Saturday, as they were held to a draw by a feisty Devizes side.

Mendip’s goal came from Ella Sage, with keeper, Leanne Chapman, picking up the Player of the Match award for some excellent saves.

This Saturday, Mendip face Weymouth at home in Chew Valley Sports Centre at 1.30 p.m.

Mendip Ladies Seconds welcomed West Wilts to Chew Valley on Saturday, hoping to clinch third place in the table.

Mendip pushed hard from the off, and it wasn’t long before Jess Baird opened the scoring with an excellent short corner strike.

Within moments of the restart, Connie Glover picked up the ball, beat two defend- ers and calmly slotted the ball through the keeper’s legs from the top of the D.

Mendip found themselves reduced to ten players through injury, and Wilts used this to their advantage. A quickly taken free hit in the Mendip twenty-five saw Wilts fire the ball home from close range.

With Glover back on the pitch, Mendip found their form and the goals kept coming.

Emily Sparkes was next on the score sheet with an excellent far post tap in, followed by a spectacular fall into the net.

Just before half-time, Glover added another to the score sheet.

The second half started in the same way, with Mendip pushing Wilts further and further into their own half. Sally Stanford scored goal number five after she deflected in Jackie Browning’s strike.

Mendip had lots of time and space on the ball, allowing defensive midfielders, Jess Baird and Player of the Match, Kate Penn, to push forward, creating numerous chances for the ladies in yellow.

Glover bagged herself two more goals, leaving the final score 7-1. Carrie Tiley
