Mendip Hockey’s unbeaten run came to an end on Saturday, as they succumbed to a narrow defeat at the hands of a Chippenham side who currently boast a 100% record in WCWHL East Division.
The home side created the better of the early chances, with some effective passing through the middle. Mendip centre-back, Anna Swift, was called into action on numerous
occasions, but each time she proved to be more than a match for her opposite number.
Chippenham scored the game’s only goal just before half-time, with a deflected effort from a penalty corner.
Mendip started the second half determined to enforce their own style of play on the game. Defensive midfielders, Maddy Collins and April Callow, both put in a great shift, stemming the flow of the Chippenham attack and distributing the ball well. Forwards, Charlene Taylor and Georgie Kelly, also worked hard, collecting the ball from deep and passing and moving to get ahead of the play. As the game wore on, they both created some good goalscoring chances from open play, and also earned a series of short corners, but they were unable to force an equaliser.
Mendip’s Player of the Match vote was awarded to keeper, Carrie Tiley, who made some good saves and tried hard to keep the defence well-organised.
This Saturday, Mendip return to league action as they welcome Weston-super-Mare to Norton Hill at 10.30 a.m. Carrie Tiley
