With the First Team having a weekend off, the seconds took centre stage on Saturday, when they hosted Chard in Somerset One. The Seconds put in a good performance to edge a closely contested game and earn a four-try bonus point win.
The hosts started well and were soon on the scoresheet when fly half, Adam Sinden, profited from a well-worked backs move to dummy his way over. Full back, Tom Rideout, added the conversion.
As was typical of the game though, each time Norton threatened to pull clear, the visitors responded with a score of their own to ensure they remained in touch.
Norton moved further ahead when some good play close to the line by the pack committed the Chard defence. A long pass from scrum half, Ian Tiley, allowed prop, Matt Edgell, to put winger, Chris Harper, in at the corner.
Back came Chard as they pounced on a loose ball in midfield before Norton scored twice in quick succession. Firstly, Edgell was on hand to power over from close range and soon after, Harper doubled his tally as he went over in the corner to seal the bonus point which Rideout converted.
Chard fought back before half-time when the referee awarded a try to their winger when Edgell clearly grounded the ball first and this saw them well in the hunt at half-time.
The second half saw the game continue in a similar manner, with both sides making considerable inroads into each other's territory.
Chard scored a try and threatened to retake the lead before Sinden burst through the defence to score the clinching try. Rideout again converted to put Norton nine points clear.
There was still time for Chard to score one more try, but Norton held on to win by four points.
Star men for Norton were number eight, Jamie Rose, who made a number of storming runs and centre, Jack Rowles, who was impressive throughout on his return from injury.
