MUSKETEERS 20 PILGRIMS 27

With a mid-afternoon start, the sun was at its peak on this unusually hot September Saturday.

Both sides started strong, and this was Musketeers’ first game away. They had a few of the team missing, but went out with heads high, determined to give the home team a tough game. The first quarter was low-scoring, with Pilgrims taking the lead by two. The second and third quarters were closely fought, with both teams matching each other goal-for-goal, meaning the half-time score saw Pilgrims in the lead by just one goal.

There was some really strong play from defence with several turnovers, and some super shooting from Lula who was subsequently awarded Player of the Match and Players’ Player. The intense heat saw both sides starting to struggle going into the fourth quarter. Sammie joined Musketeers in centre, giving us fresh legs on the court, but the Pilgrims’ shooter had a really strong quarter, giving them the win by seven goals.

A great strong start to the season for Purnell’s new team.

MINSTRELS 21 DOVES 17

On Saturday, 14th, Minstrels were playing in Bruton against Doves.

At the end of the first quarter, once learning how each other play, SJ Eyles (GS) and Lily Burgess (GA) were playing beautifully with one another. Minstrels came out fighting in the second quarter, with Dawn Heal (WD) and Jemma Plummer (WA) making some incredible interceptions. We pulled back in the second quarter by three points, but were still losing.

We took control in the third quarter, and Charis Saunders-Prouse (C) was passing some great balls into the D. As a result of this Minstrels had pulled ahead of Robins and were now leading by two points going into the fourth quarter. The defence unit worked immaculately throughout, with Dawn putting some serious pressure on and Laura Snook (GK) making great tips and interceptions, stopping the ball from getting to the GS at every opportunity. With Emma Weskin (GD) keeping full control of her player, the Doves’ attack were being taken out of the game.

Emma and Laura worked very well together, allowing them both to get remarkable interceptions. Their hard work was recognised by all after Emma received Player of the Match and Laura received Players’ Player. The determination and fight which Minstrels put up led them to their first win of the season with a nail-biting score of 21-17.
