Chew Valley Cats 5 - Devonport 31

On what was one of the most grotesque days of the winter so far, The Cat’s welcomed Devonport for their first ever encounter. With the clubs main pitches out of action due to the weather, Chew Valley played an historic first senior game on the new ground at Wallycourt road and with great grass coverage and a wet surface on top we were in for an entertaining afternoon of good old fashioned rugby.

Chew and Devonport were neck and neck for the first 20 minutes of the game, with no team showing dominance, it was an unlucky break through the middle that saw Devonport take the first points of the game. The Cats forwards displayed some awesome scrummaging, actually dominating the opposition, but it was in open play that they showed their development and improvement in continuity that was impressive to see. Special mention to Chloe Sorensen and Aly Stevens for their strong carries earning themselves players of the match with Ani Heredi having a strong game in defence. Robyn Perry picked up the back of the match but again special mention to Nancy Portsmouth for a superb all-round game.

Chew Valley held strong through the second quarter, holding Devonport to just a 2 try lead at half time.

The second half saw the talented Devonport fly half control the game well, kicking long balls which inevitably pinned the Cats into their 22. Each time the visitors got into the try zone sadly they scored. A solid shift put in by all and Cats certainly displayed the ability to play some good rugby with fantastic hands in what were atrocious conditions. The Cats were rewarded with a try for their efforts in the final 10 minutes after some great phases of play and movement of the ball through the backs to put Taylor Woodman in for a try in the corner.

A brilliant game of rugby played in the true spirit of the game with every Cat having a superb game. The developmental journey this team are on is an absolute pleasure to watch and we must remember the scoreline is just one element of sport. Enjoyment, improvement and team spirit count for far more.
