Our brilliant Somerset Juniors came home triumphant after thrashing rivals Devon in the second round of the National Under 18’s Triples Indoor Bowls competition at Tiverton on Sunday.

It was a very early start, on a miserably dark, wet morning for the team and all their supporters who had to travel to Tiverton for a nine o’clock start. However, after a quick visit to MacDonald’s for breakfast and lots of strong coffee, our team were all ready to go! And did they go!

The whole team, ably supported by their two subs, Fliss Sheldrake and Zach Broom, who sat on the rink side and cheered them on, put on an amazing performance winning 50 shots to Devon’s 20, when the Devon team conceded after 15 ends.

Chloe Holmes, Jack Vine and Cameron Bowen had a run away win, while Lucas Powell, Lydia Sheldrake and Madi King had a slightly harder battle but in the end managed to win by 6 shots. An absolutely fantastic result.

The competition is split into four regional groups, the winners of each group going through to the finals at Nottingham. Somerset, after winning both games in their group, automatically go through to the semi finals. So, on March 24th our team will be off once again to Nottingham to play their semifinal in the morning and, fingers crossed, if they get through, the final in the afternoon.

It’s nail biting stuff, as we found out last year when they got through to the final only to be pipped at the post by an older and more experienced team. Hopefully this year, they will once again get through to the final but this time a little older and wiser, they will also manage to claim the trophy.
