MENDIP Golf Club captains Jack Hayes and Louise Scott have held a very successful Charity Day to raise funds for their chosen charity, Minds in Somerset.

A full entry list of 144 players, with a large number of visitors, competed in a ‘Shambles Texas Scramble’ event on a hot sunny day with a couple of heavy showers thrown in the mix.

There were numerous volunteers running various events alongside the main competition including a ‘First Tee Twist’ where the players had to spin the wheel to determine which of the odd clubs that Jack had chosen, that they had to use to tee off.

There was a real buzz around the club all day and well into the evening. The winning team with 110 points, but only after count back, were Jenny Merrett, Ryan Light, Janet Light and Peter Merrett, with Tim Flagg, Cameron Elliott, Chris Webber and Carlo Yates in 2nd place. Third with 107 points were Mark George, Graham Colbourne, Andy Stott and Dave Cox.

This was a highly successful day for Mendip Golf Club and particularly for the Charity, who were the real winners, with a magnificent £5,500 raised for what is a truly worthy cause. It was a brilliant effort captains.

The Ladies held a Texas Scramble which saw an extremely close run affair with Susan Forshaw, Penny Oliver, Jinhee Page and Diane Stanton eventually emerging the winners with a net 59. This was just one point better than the next four teams which after count back saw Sue Alcock, Chris Olds, June Page and Elaine P Richardson coming 2nd and Libby Bellew, Lulu Carolan Anne Hopkins and Andrea Williams in 3rd place.

The Ladies Alliance B team lost a close match when visiting Thornbury 5-9 with wins from Marian Speed and Fran Davies and a half from Ann Padley.

The Wednesday Social Golf, a 3 clubs and a putter event, saw a splendid win for Rebecca Edwards and Hazel Scriven with an amazing 30 points over the 9 hole event, including 2 x 5 pointers! The evening was rounded off with some excellent food provided by Steve and the Mendip clubhouse tam.

The Mixed friendly team visited Wells and while it turned out to be a most enjoyable match, Wells proved too strong with Mendip registering just two halved matches from Jinhee Page/Keith Gadsden and Rosi Brown/John Ward.

The Seniors Invitation Day showed just what good health Mendip is in at present with 80 taking part in the event. The winners were David Forshaw with his guest from Saltford with a tremendous 48 points. In 2nd place were Tony Scott and guest with 44 after count back from Mike Merrick and his guest.

And finally there has been more success for Mendip’s young girls, with six of them competing in the Somerset Girls Championships held at Mendip. The 36 hole Championship saw yet another title win for Libby Dezis with Connie Cox in 3rd place and Maisie Dezis in 4th place. Maisie was also the Under 15s gross winner. The 18 hole gross competition was won by Matilda Rocker-Cook with Harper Howerd in 2nd place and to complete the success story Lauren Morris was the winner of the 18 hole Stableford event.
