On Friday, 28th September a Presentation Evening was held to celebrate the first Summer Skittles season to take place at Westfield Sports and Community Centre on West Hill Road.

It follows a very busy season, which ran from May to September, in which the league had eighteen teams who played 153 matches. In addition, there were five rounds of cup matches. In fact, it was so busy, that full use of both skittle alleys at the club was made for much of the season!

Top of the league were ‘Odds & Sods’, who only lost one game all season, with an impressive 102 points. Runners-up were ‘Malc’s Crew’, with 88.5 points, closely followed by the ‘Conga Boys’ with 88 points. ‘Payner’s Four’ are proud holders of the wooden spoon with 40. However, they won the one-off match on the presentation night – perhaps they have hidden talent!

The Cup was won by ‘Odds & Sods’, with the runners-up being the ‘Conga Boys’. Including both the Cup and the league, the prize money for the season came to over £3,000. Terry Andrews, who brought the idea for Summer Skittles to the club, said: “We are delighted with the success of our first season, and are looking forward to next summer, when we hope to have even more teams playing. A big thank you to this year’s teams (and our stickers up); many of whom have already signed up for next year.”

On the night, the club also held a collection for The Grand Appeal, who raise funds for Bristol Children’s Hospital, which is looking after Ariana Sparey, the daughter of a member of one of the teams. Several teams very generously gave some of their prize money, which meant that, in addition to other money collected on the night, over £1,100 was raised.

Westfield Sports and Community Centre will be holding a Charity Night on Saturday, 27th October in aid of The Grand Appeal. Amongst other things will be live music, an auction and raffle, with some fantastic prizes. More details will be appearing in The Journal in the next few weeks. Other fundraising ideas are coming in all the time, so please mark the date in your diaries and come along!
