Welton continued their positive momentum towards the playoffs with another top drawer performance at West Clewes in front of another large crowd of over 100 supporters.
The game started in Spring sunshine with a strong wind blowing up the pitch and it took a while for both teams to get used to the conditions. The first real action of the game saw Lewis Russell deliver a cross from the right that was met by Lewis Hunt but his header flew over the Lebeq bar. The visitors responded with a 25-yard-shot from Josh Williams that was deflected away for a corner. Welton were probing and good work down the left flank from Toby Cole saw his pin point cross met by Russell, in space in the area, but he could only manage to scoop his effort over the bar.
A well worked free-kick saw Alex Wych’s delivery fall to Courtney Charles who in turn set up Chris Pile and his goal bound shot was saved low down by Lebeq keeper, Luis Hadgerjonas.
A moment of controversy occurred just after the half hour mark when a free-kick fell to Joe Ellis who glanced the ball towards the net but Lebeq keeper somehow managed to claw the ball away from the goal line. There was a big shout that the ball had crossed the line but it wasn’t given by the assistant referee. However, Welton were not to be denied. A corner from Pile fell to fullback Jaiden Savery on a charge into the Lebeq area were he was brought down and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty. Upstepped Russell who fired in a terrific penalty straight down the middle into the visitors net.
Welton’s lead was short lived, right on halftime a corner on the left was delivered into the area where Sasha Tong rose above the rest and headed home the equaliser for the visitors.
The second half saw Welton pressing their visitors and Russell went close with an effort, Williams was then booked for a horrible challenge on Hunt. Welton got the all important second goal in the 55th minute. A long ball out of defence dissected the Lebeq defence and Cole was on hand to race through and slide the ball past the advancing keeper into the empty net. Ellis was then taken off to be replaced by Jacob Watson who found himself booked within a couple of minutes of coming on.
Welton made sure of the points in the 80th minute when the ball fell to Cameron Allen 25 yards out and he launched an unstoppable strike that flew past the keeper and into the Lebeq net.
Welton manager, Tom Smith then brought himself on for a cameo appearance and Welton keeper, Alfie Kelsey, who had had a quiet afternoon saw him alert to pull off a great save to deny Tong. Just before the final whistle, Watson and a Lebeq player came together in midfield and after a lengthy consideration Watson received his second yellow card of the game and he was off. However the ten men of Welton easily saw out the game and secured the points.
Next Saturday, 30th April Welton are at home to Almondsbury in the last game of the season kick-off 3pm at West Clewes.
Welton have already secured a play off place but who they play and whether it is home or away remains uncertain with Wincanton, Warminster, Radstock and Wells City all in the mix. It will all become clear after next Saturdays game.
