Fifty talented young golfers played in the Wee Wonders South West Regional Qualifier on the Manor Course at Farrington Park last weekend in glorious sunshine. The National Wee Wonders Championship aims to bring opportunities to up-and-coming young golfers of twelve-years-old and younger to compete in a fun and competitive event with a view to qualifying for the Grand Final at St Andrews, Scotland in August. With such a great prize on offer, the event pulled in youngsters from all over the West Country.
The standard of golf was staggering, with a six-year-old scoring a gross 49 and four players scoring a gross four over par 31 on the par 27 Manor Course. The hotly contested Boys 11–12-year-old section had the biggest entry, with Keir Begley, from Croyde, Devon, winning with a gross 31, just pipping Samuel Trott, from Weymouth, on a better back five countback.
The Girls' 11–12 section saw an equally impressive display of golf with twelve-year-old Caley McGinty, from Bristol, shooting a gross 31 to win by twelve strokes.
Farrington Park Juniors also had a share of the success, with ten-year-old David Miles shooting a gross 31 to win the 9–10 Boys section. Abi Gray won the Girls' 9–10 section with a forty and Frankie Dezis finished runner-up in the Girls' 5–8 section with 52.
Round of the day came from six-year-old Cillian Roberts, from Swindon, with an incredible gross 49 to win the 5–6-year-old Boys. This will be the second year in a row he has played in the St Andrews final, having qualified last year from Swindon course, Broome Manor.
