This was one of the few games that survived the recent floods and the pitch was just about playable, with areas of standing water and a very heavy and sticky pitch that was always going to hinder quality football.
After the kick-off, it took both sides time to adapt to the conditions and the run of the ball and Welton looked lively and had the best of the early exchanges. However, the first effort of the game fell to Corsham's Jamal Chevellou and his shot was easily gathered by Andy King in the Welton goal. Welton responded and a great solo run by Dan Cottle saw him race towards the Corsham goal, beating three men only to be halted by a last-ditch tackle. Anthony Conradi was causing the Corsham defence problems with his movement and play.
Welton continued to press and a shot from James Moon flew over the Corsham bar. This was followed by a free kick from Moon that was met by Conradi, with his back to goal, he launched a superb overhead kick that saw the ball fly goalwards, only to be halted on the line by Corsham keeper, Kent Kaupinnen. With five
minutes to go before half-time and against the run of play, the home side took the lead. A corner on the right saw the ball fall to Nick Holton, who was unmarked on the edge of the area and he drilled his
effort low into the Welton net.
The second half began in a spectacular manner. Straight from the Welton kick-off, the ball was played out to Cottle on the left and he delivered a quality cross right into the mix, where the ball was met by Conradi and he bravely dived at full stretch to head the ball past Kaupinnen into the Corsham net to score a brilliant equaliser. Conradi received treatment after scoring for a nasty facial injury that was accidentally caused by the keeper's trailing boot.
Corsham responded and a snapshot from Corsham Captain, Ben Moore, went inches wide of the Welton post.
Welton then brought on new signing from Oldlands, Ben Harris, to replace Andy Keen. Cottle was then booked following a clumsy tackle. The game was becoming bogged down in midfield as players tired on the heavy pitch and quality play was at a
premium. However, a good effort from Moon was saved by Kaupinnen and at the other end, Bradley Partner should have done better when the ball fell at his feet. With the Welton goal at his mercy, he fired in a weak shot that King easily dealt with.
Welton nearly snatched all three points at the end when Conradi broke through the Corsham defence, only to shoot wide of the target. In the end, the points were shared and credit must go to the Corsham groundstaff for getting the game on and the referee for his decision to allow the game to be played.
