Welton lost out for a Cup Final place in the Les Phillips Cup, having more than matched their Premier League opponents, but denied by the lottery of the penalty shoot-out.
It was a tentative start from both teams early on, but it was Welton who made the breakthrough on the quarter-of-an-hour. Dan Scrivens on a charge down the left flank was brought down close to the corner flag. Up stepped Tom Pawley to deliver a quality free kick into the Willand area, which was met by Joe Garland on the rise and his glancing header flew into the far corner of the visitors' net.
Welton's lead lasted for fifteen minutes, until the lively James Blake broke through the centre of the Welton defence and he calmly slotted the ball past Welton keeper, Andy King. Four minutes later, the visitors got their second, when pressure on the Welton defence saw a no-hope ball that looked like it was going out of play, met by Lee Smyth, who hadn't given up hope and saw him hook the ball back into the mix where it was met by Brett Worbey, who drilled his effort into the net to give the visitors a first-half lead.
The second half saw Welton pressurising the Willand defence and Anthony Conradi saw his effort caught by the wind, which was saved at the second attempt by Willand keeper, Kurtis Parkin. Welton continued to press, but the Willand defence seemed more than capable in dealing with what Welton could throw at them. However, in the seventieth minute, the breakthrough came for Welton when the visitors gave away a corner on the left. A good delivery from Pawley saw Welton's central defender, Ritchie Chandler, rise above the Willand defence to head home a quality equaliser, much to the delight of the Green Army. Both sides then went all out for the winner, but after the ninety minutes, the game went to extra time.
The deadlock couldn't be broken and the game went to penalties. Willand won the shoot-out, 8–7, and gained the place in the Final against fellow Devon team, Barnstaple. All is not lost for Welton – they can now see out the final few games left of the season and gain the promotion their efforts richly deserve.
