On Good Friday, Welton travelled to Trowbridge Road in good form, having run promoted Shepton Mallet all the way in a 1–1 draw just six days earlier. Bradford had already won the First Division outright and were due to be awarded the trophy at the end of the game, but the team were looking to put the record straight, following the 3–3 draw on Boxing Day where they were outplayed by a hard-working Welton team.
Nick Beaverstock's men proved this was no fluke as they ran the Champions hard again. At half-time, the game was goalless, but it came to life in the last twenty minutes when Dan Cottle smacked home a long-range free kick that stunned the Wiltshire team.
However, Bradford responded in the same way they did on Boxing Day and top scorer, Sam Jordan, netted with minutes to spare to make it 1–1 and it finished that way.
Great credit must go to the Welton squad, who have bounced back in tremendous style following their March wobbles, also to the large numbers of Welton supporters who made their way to Bradford.
Nick Beaverstock is already excited about next season. "There is a huge amount of work to do to get this club into the Premier Division again, but we now have the nucleus of a great squad here. We've proved that we can compete against the best in this Division. We haven't been beaten by either Bradford or Shepton this season and they are the teams going up. We just need to be more consistent and the other thing the table tells you is that whilst we don't concede many, we don't score enough either."
Director, Stuart Rogers, is able to announce that the four runners who ran the Bath Half Marathon in March raised approaching £1,000, half of which will now be donated to Macmillan Cancer support. He said: "We will be doing it again next year. Nick Beaverstock enjoyed it hugely and I think he realised that with a little more support, we could make it an annual event that Welton Rovers can get involved with. So, at the start of next season, I will be looking for more running volunteers with the goal of raising £5,000, instead of £1,000."
Continuing the charity theme, Welton Rovers will be hosting a Charity Day on Sunday, 4th May, which incorporates two football matches, a BBQ and family fun. The day is held in memory of former Rover, Paul Ingram, and Dorothy House Hospice – all are welcome.
Stuart Rogers commented: "Ingo was a big part of Welton Rovers and as a club, we want to be more visible and active when it comes to local charity work, so a charity fundraising day in aid of Dorothy House goes together perfectly and something I expect we will be doing annually. I would urge the town to support this day and to support Dorothy House."
Welton also enjoyed a 3–0 win against Ashton and Backwell Utd on Easter Monday in their last home game of the season.
