CLEVEDON 10 WRITHLINGTON 0
Despite chaos on the M5 resulting in other major roads being gridlocked, Chris Cox, Derek Beg, Ray Clarke and Andy Jeffery managed to arrive at Clevedon before the opposition!
The refurbished astro courts were very quick and “skiddy”, giving Clevedon a significant advantage. They made full use of this in winning the first rubbers in double quick time 6-1, 6-2 (v Chris and Derek) and 6-1, 6-0 (v Ray and Andy).
Against the A pair of Miles and David, Ray and Andy never got a look-in, and had another embarrassing 6-1, 6-0 loss. However, Chris and Derek put up a good fight against Mike and Mike, but the last set drifted away for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 loss.
The Clevedon players were highly competent (David organises the over 50s County Seniors and Mike Maiden does the same for the over 55s, and we reckoned Miles was better than both of them!), so our prediction is that they will win the division. They were also nice people, with honest line calls and good hosting in the clubhouse after. A good (but one-sided) match on a lovely summer evening.
